"Different Take" of the week

Peter wins this week's award with a thought-provoking post on the dumbing down of our school systems. Many sites had the math joke but his take on the direction our public schools are taking puts him over the top.

I rarely agree with Peter on educational issues but here he's right on target...

Thank you. My work brings me face to face with the recipients of the social promotion and dumbed down curriculum every day.

Although this isn't the only reason they are underperforming, it is one of them.

I have also seen the sad effects of families who don't seem involved and kids who don't understand the importance of an education.

I posted this comment on Peter's site. It will likely not pass muster there. However, I want to reiterate, the post was good and I agree that education seems to have taken a downturn ... whatever happened to old-fashioned rote learning, reading, taking notes, and practice, practice, practice?

Peter, it was not a bad piece … not so much anger.

I think the idea of Outcome Based Education was not to tell Johnny that it was okay to answer the question wrong, but to provide encouragement when it was obvious Johnny had tried to solve the problem using established methods. I don't agree with this … I’m a firm believer in practice and hard work, but it was more than you said.

However, the anger reappears in your return comment to JYD.

A shame.
